"Fountain of youth" may be only a legend, but it never stopped scientists seeking access to "longevity" pace. In recent years, researchers have strong interests on rapamycin, metformin and other drugs, mainly because they can effectively extend life and the ability to treat disease.
However, recent studies have shown that anti-aging ability of these drugs are no longer unique: the number of plant extracts containing known strongest anti-aging properties.
Researchers from Concordia University in Canada conducted more than 10000 screening tests, and to see which plant extracts can effectively prolong the survival period of yeast.
You might imagine, yeast is the most common model organisms that in the study of life's length, mainly because yeast and human cells have similar lifespan.
"Overall, we found there are six kinds of molecules can effectively delay the yeast life cycle," the researchers from Concordia University Vladimir Titorenko said.
Related results were published on "Oncotarget" magazine, they found six kinds of molecules, Willow Bark Extract has the most significant effect, but this phenomenon has not been reported in any magazine before .in the test, Willow Bark Extract can extend the average life cycle of the yeast by 4.75 times, and prolong the longest life cycle 3.69 times.
If the results can be repeated on organisms other than yeast, it would be an amazing discovery. Further, in addition to anti-aging, these compounds also can prevent some diseases, such as the occurrence of cancer. Other molecules are from cohosh extract, valerian extract, passion flower extract, ginkgo extract and celery extract.
The researchers say they will be divided into six different projects to further study the molecular mechanisms of them as well as effects behind it.
